On March 31, 1865, only days before the end of the war, the USS General Lyon ship hit rough water off Cape Hatteras and a fire erupted in the engine room. The fire spread quickly throughout the ship, killing most of the people on board. There was a large number of discharged Union soldiers on the ship that were returning from war. Many of these men were part of the 56th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
The 56th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment lost 200 men on that tragic day. Only 5 men from this Regiment survived.
On board the vessel were approximately 500 Americans, including paroled prisoners of war, refuges and other civilians. There were many women and children who lost their lives that day. Of these lives lost were 47 White County men. To date, this was the worst day of loss for White County men in war history.
